Just as water mirrors your face,
so your face mirrors your heart. -- Proverbs 27:19
When do I disagree with this wisdom? When my heart is being read like an open book.
Facial expressions & non-verbal communication cues… I am attentive to these more than words. Most of us listen to what is not being said more than the words we exchange.
Yet, when someone says to me, “Lloyd, you think I’m _____.” I quickly respond, “I didn’t say that.”
My heart said it, my face spoke it and my tongue didn’t need to get in the way.
This only disturbs me when it is the dark side of my heart that is being revealed. I’d rather have it hidden away so others don’t see my prejudice, disgust, anger, or judgment.
So, I thank God for this mirror of the heart. It is my heart that must be surrendered to the transforming ways of Jesus. For when my heart beats with love, joy, peace, patience… others will see Jesus without a word being spoken. And when others see the dark side of my heart being expressed on my face, I must welcome the feedback, and rush toward repentance and renewal.
The challenge is… giving Jesus access to my heart.
